Biography
Matthew Weger
Matthew Weger is a clarinetist, arranger, and composer from Bloomsbury, New Jersey. He serves on the board of the Plattsburgh Clarinet Choir as Treasurer and regularly performs with the Hunterdon Symphony, Whitehouse Wind Symphony, and Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra. He studied clarinet and bass clarinet with Kevin Schempf, following earlier study with Dr. Aileen Razey and Dr. Soo Goh.
His arrangements explore color-forward scoring for clarinet ensembles, with particular interest in low clarinets. This approach — emphasizing timbre and blend over technical display — reflects a belief that the clarinet family, when scored thoughtfully, can achieve an orchestral richness rarely associated with chamber music.
Matthew holds a B.S. in Music Education from Kutztown University and a Master of Music in Music Theory from Bowling Green State University. His theoretical work informs his compositional practice: careful attention to voice leading, modal color, and structural proportion are hallmarks of his output.
Compositional Philosophy
"The clarinet family has an enormous palette — from the chalumeau warmth of the bass to the crystalline clarity of the E-flat. My goal is always to find arrangements that make those differences speak, not just fill parts."
