Program Notes
Sketches in Two States of Mind is an eight-minute work for bass clarinet quartet built around a flurry of fleeting ideas, set off by a singular moment in time. It is the work of a return.
As it unfolds, a dualism emerges within the piece — two contrasting states of mind that interrupt, answer, and finally reconcile one another. The opening is fast and angular (♩=158); what follows turns inward before the two states are drawn back together.
Performance Notes
Scored for four bass clarinets. The fast material rewards tight, unanimous articulation across the quartet; the contrasting slow writing asks for a singing, blended tone. A confident low-clarinet section at the collegiate level and above will find it idiomatic and rewarding.
